Awareness Week

This spring the Bay Area and SJSU community have a unique opportunity to participate in a Transgender Awareness Week designed to place the transgender experience into a context by which it can be readily understood.

Over the past decade there has been heightened public awareness of transgender issues. With the increased visibility of transgender persons also comes an increase in discrimination and violence directed at transgender, intersex, and gender variant people. The Gender Education and Advocacy organization states that, “Transgendered people are the most stigmatized and misunderstood of the larger sexual minorities (Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender).” In spite of this, the transgender community is emerging into its own place in history, as a new movement, expanding the language of gender and sex.

In an effort to foster education and community building, the SJSU Transgender Awareness Week hopes to promote a positive and empowering dialogue featuring various speakers and artists dealing with the transgender experience.

Transgender and other gender variant people live and work in our communities. They are your students, colleagues, employees, administrators, friends, and family members. Please join us and help to make the Bay Area a safer, more enlightened, diverse community.

Faculty & Groups: If you would like to build the week's events into your Spring schedule please contact us to reserve seating space.
