M.A. Education, Concentration in Curriculum and Instruction

Mission

Our mission is to prepare teachers who have high expectations for all students and have the skills, knowledge, and dispositions to support high student achievement in diverse school contexts.  Our teacher candidates will prepare children to develop their potential as learners and participants in a complex, democratic society. 

Student Learning Objectives

Masters candidates will be able to:

  1. Interpret foundation and theoretical literature related to education in a specific content area (e.g., literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, etc.).
  2. Demonstrate how to critically examine and evaluate methods of instruction including those used with struggling K-12 learners and non-native speakers of English
  3. Use on-going assessment data to teach students from diverse linguistic and cultural backgrounds
  4. Discuss and critique different perspectives of curriculum and explore how these perspectives relate to K-12 classrooms and schooling
  5. Recognize and discuss important aspects of history, language, and culture undergirding assumptions, values, and beliefs of competing perspectives in education
  6. Review and critique research literature in her/his field of interest
  7. Design and implement a study to address a question in her/his field of interest that supports a defensible conclusion
