The School of Art and Design recognizes the important role of the CSU System in providing leadership in the arts in California's public higher education system. It is the School's mission to provide a stimulating environment for education in the professional practice and critical and historical study of art and design.
Accomplishing this within the context of the University requires special attention to the reciprocal influences among the art and design fields and among other disciplines including the performing arts, humanities, sciences, and education. To fulfill its mission, the School of Art and Design affirms its commitment to:
the continual refinement of curricular programs and extracurricular activities at the undergraduate and graduate levels for the benefit of a diverse student body and the community;
the development and retention of a faculty and staff of professionally trained and experienced artists, designers, and scholars;
the development of well-equipped and safe facilities along with expanded access to emerging technologies for the study and production of art and design; and
the development of mutually beneficial relationships with alumni as well as members of regional civic, cultural, educational and industry-related communities.
I. The continual refinement of curricular programs and extracurricular activities at the undergraduate and graduate levels for the benefit of a diverse student body and the community.
A. Offer a balanced curriculum emphasizing creativity as well as skill, contemporary issues as well as historical perspective. 1. Maintain and develop programs which strive for excellence and provide leadership in their fields.
2. Provide a traditional liberal education in arts with emphasis on the critical thinking and communicative skills of students.
3. Improve students' awareness of the ethical, social and environmental concerns implicit in professional art and design work.
4. Develop collaboration among School programs.
5. Enhance the use of emerging technologies through cooperative activities fostering the acquisition and use of equipment and programs.
6. Develop interdisciplinary activity with other units of the College and University.
7. Develop a curriculum responsive to diverse world views and changing multicultural student and faculty constituencies.
B. Develop extracurricular activities enhancing student learning opportunities.
1. Expand guest artist, designer, and scholar programs.
2. Develop student organizations and encourage student participation in School, University, community, and professional groups.
3. Provide practical experience for students within the professional art/design world through internships, workshops, and field experiences in design firms, galleries, museums, schools, studios, and government agencies.
4. Develop faculty/student activities beyond the campus and at the regional, national, and international level (i.e. conferences and competitions).
C. Establish a gallery exhibition and development plan.
1. Promote the galleries as a University and community resource.
2. Address diverse audience needs (multicultural, historical and media-based issues)
3. Develop an advisory board to address community issues and fund raising opportunities.
4. Cooperate with the University in developing a collections and exhibitions policy.
D. Enhance the recruitment and retention of students from under-represented groups in society.
1. Develop scholarships and other funding sources to assist qualified students in attending the University.
II. The development and retention of a faculty and staff of professionally trained and experienced artists, designers, and scholars.
A. Recruit and develop a diverse faculty and staff representative of a multicultural community.
B. Increase support for faculty and staff development opportunities.
1. Foster support for grants, exhibitions, and participation in professional associations.
2. Review staff workload and assignments for equity.
C. Promote participation of staff, students, and faculty in identifying and implementing School goals and procedures.
III. The development of well-equipped and safe facilities along with expanded access to emerging technologies for the study and production of art and design.
A. Review and update current School facilities and equipment.
1. Develop plans and procedures to most effectively utilize School facilities.
2. Develop effective instructional spaces in regard to furniture, lighting, display walls and storage;
3. Develop long-range plans to improve existing tools and equipment.
4. Review safety and toxic materials handling policy for all aspects of the School facilities and institute appropriate modifications.
5. Develop plans to cooperatively acquire and utilize emerging technological equipment in all art and design fields.
B. Develop long-range plans for remodeling and additions to the existing art and design facilities.
1. Integrate and consolidate studios and classrooms to improve efficiency and reduce under utilized space.
2. Upgrade and expand gallery facilities.
3. Develop plans for art history facilities in the Humanities Building (per University Master Plan).
4. Develop plans for remodeling of the Art Building (per University Master Plan).
5. Develop plans for remodeling of the art facilities in the Industrial Studies Building (per University Master Plan).
IV. The development of mutually beneficial relationships with alumni as well as members of regional civic, cultural, educational and industry-related communities.
A. Improve School public relations and marketing.
B. Provide venues for professional and pre-professional interaction of students and faculty with members of community cultural and educational agencies.
C. Strengthen the relationship between the School, its alumni, and alumni organizations.
D. Develop a fundraising plan to enhance School facilities and equipment.
