Environmental Studies

Mission Statement

To provide a rigorous, systematic, and integrated approach to the study, management, and solution of environmental problems and issues.

Undergraduate Major Program Goals

All undergraduate students are expected

  1. Have a basic understanding of principles from a number of science and social science fields as they relate to environmental issues
  2. Know an up-to-date range of sustainable solutions—t echnological, political, and economic—to environmental challenges
  3. Know where sources of uncertainty exist in environmental information
  4. Understand local to global, cross-cultural, national and international dimensions of environmental issues, including environmental justice, and know how actions at a personal and societal level can promote a sustainable society
  5. Able to competently conduct group work and work in teams; possess good project management and associated professional skills
  6. Proficient with computer software commonly used in the environmental studies field (e.g., word processing, spreadsheets, and presentation software)
  7. Proficient at web and literature research
  8. Able to deliver high quality verbal presentations
  9. Can demonstrate excellent writing ability
  10. Can demonstrate good civic engagement techniques
  11. Possess good research design and data analysis skills

  1. Proficient at application of statistics to environmental issues

Goals Unique to the  B.A. in Environmental Studies

  1. Proficient at applying theoretical frameworks to understand how environmental problems occur and how negative environmental impacts can be addressed through means such as policy, laws, and NGOs

Goals Unique to the B.A. in Teacher Preparation

  1. Have knowledge required by the State of California for multiple subjects preparation teaching

Goals the MS in Environmental Studies

  1. Able to thoroughly review literature and research in a specific area of the environmental studies and able to formulate original research questions based on critical analysis of aforementioned review. 
  2. Able to develop appropriate and feasible methods for original research project
  3. Possess thorough knowledge of the history of environmental thought
  4. Able to carry out original research plan and write a high quality scholarly thesis or professional report
  5. Able to present original research results in a public oral defense
