Mission of the Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Department

To serve society, the public sector, and private industry by:

  1. Providing undergraduate and graduate mechanical and aerospace engineering education that prepares students with the engineering knowledge, modern applications, and lifelong learning skills required for service in the engineering profession and industry.
  2. Contributing to the development and application of knowledge through faculty scholarship.
  3. Preparing students for the modern professional-practice environment.

Educational Objectives of the BSME and BSAE Programs

The Educational Objectives for these programs are to provide:

  1. A strong foundation in mathematics, basic science and engineering fundamentals to successfully compete for entry-level positions or pursue graduate studies in ME / AE or related fields.
  2. Contemporary professional and lifelong learning skills including hands-on laboratory experience, familiarity with modern engineering tools, application software, and information technology to successfully compete in the local, national and global engineering market.
  3. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, broad knowledge, and an understanding of multicultural, societal, economic, and global perspectives to work effectively in multidisciplinary teams, both as team members and as leaders
  4. An understanding of the ethical choices inherent in the engineering profession to deal with issues such as public safety, product marketing, and respect for intellectual property.

Supporting Outcomes of the BSAE Programs

Graduates of the BSAE program should have:

  1. Ability to use mathematics, science and engineering principles to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
  2. Ability to design and conduct water tunnel, wind tunnel, and shock tunnel experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data from such experiments.
  3. Ability to perform conceptual and preliminary design of aircraft or spacecraft to meet a set of mission requirements within realisitic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturabillty, and sustainability.
  4. Ability to collaborate with people from different cultures, abilities, backgrounds, and disciplines to complete aerospace projects.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively through technical reports, memos, and oral presentations as well as in small group settings.
  6. Understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
  7. Broad education to understand current events, how they relate to aerospace engineering, as well as the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
  8. Recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in, life-long learning.
