Carrie Medders - Senior Director, University Personnel

Carrie has been with the CSU almost 21 years, most of that time spent at SJSU. Carrie began her SJSU career as a Compensation Analyst then spent more than 10 years doing PeopleSoft system implementation and support at SJSU and Cal State East Bay. Now, she has a hybrid role managing several typical HR functions as well as HR technology. Did you know? Carrie was the Graduate Assistant for the 1992 NCAA championship rifle team at West Virginia University - “Let’s Goooooo, Mountaineers!” Her favorite food is the potato, preferably in the fried form.

Rosalina Calderon - Recruiting and On Boarding Lead (Staff Recruiting)

Rosalina has been with SJSU almost 12 years after coordinating Clinical Trials at UCSD’s Cancer Center and another non-profit organization. She loved the work and it provided her “with a great sense of purpose” but she wanted to move back to the Bay Area to be closer to her family. Did you know? Rosalina is a retired professional Mexican folk dancer and actually performed at SJSU as a child. Her favorite food is enchiladas rancheras with grilled chicken/steak on the side. “Yummmm!!!”

Amanda Frank -  Senior Recruiter (Staff Recruiting)

Amanda will celebrate 13 years of SJSU service in May. She is a graduate of SJSU and started working in HR upon earning her degree. She started as an Information Representative and has held several positions on her way to becoming a Senior Recruiter. Did you know? Amanda is a lifetime member of Little People of America (LPA), a non-profit organization that provides support and information to people of short stature and their families. Amanda’s favorite food is Indian.

Ana Dean -  Recruiter (Staff Recruiting)

Ana graduated from SJSU in 2017 and joined the UP team just two months later. She previously worked as a retail store manager where she gained a variety of HR-related experience, all while working toward her degree. She’s been with the department a little over a year and was “more than excited to come back and serve the campus.” Did you know? Ana loves road trips and her favorite food is sushi.

Christina Hill - Recruiter (Staff Recruiting)

Christina joined HR/UP more than 14 years ago after a former supervisor working on campus reached out and told her about our retirement benefits. She started as a part-time receptionist and has not looked back, increasing her skill set by working in several units in the department. Did you know? Christina likes to bake and her favorite foods are Italian and Mexican.

Remie Bontrager - Coordinator, Faculty Recruitment

Remie has been on campus nearly three years, joining the university because she “wanted to work for an organization that makes a difference in the world.” Did you know? Remie hiked to the top of Half Dome in Yosemite and returned on the same day - that’s 14 miles round trip with a 4800 foot elevation gain! Remie’s favorite food is eggs.

Tony Garcia - Senior Compensation Analyst

Tony has almost 18 years of service on campus, starting his SJSU career as a student assistant in Math & Computer Science. “I enjoyed working on campus so much that when an opportunity in HR opened, I was eager to apply.” He started at the front desk and is grateful for the opportunities he’s been given to advance his career. Did you know? A large part of Tony’s family has worked, or currently works, on campus. Tony’s favorite food is BBQ.

Maggie Carrera - Compensation & Compliance Analyst
Maggie graduated from SJSU and when she was laid off from her previous job, she landed a temporary appointment in Human Resources. This opened the door for a permanent position. “I can’t believe it’s been 17 years!” Did you know? Maggie has been a member of the Ho'oku'i outrigger canoe paddling club for seven years. The question she gets asked the most is: “Aren’t you afraid of sharks?”. Her response is always, “Nah.” Maggie loves spicy food and her favorites are Mexican, Indian and Thai.

These Spartans Stepped Beyond...

“Harish stepped beyond by pursuing an issue we’ve been having with our SJSU @ Work system where somehow the system was generating a blank record causing the system that transfers data from the CS system to the HR system to fail. By pursuing a fix and being persistent, he was able to provide a root cause of what was causing the erroneous transactions to be created and provided the process to reproduce the problem for the Chancellor’s Office. Recently the fix for this was implemented. By not having to watch the queues anymore, SJSU will have a more productive HRIS team and we can concentrate our efforts on higher value tasks. Thank you Harish! ” –Ken Guzzetta

“My department had an urgent request for a location to hold training for our staff. Michelle wasted no time in making sure that we had a suitable room to meet our needed accommodations. Michelle, thank you for always being quick and efficient with your responses!” –Anonymous
