The department admits students to the graduate Master of Urban Planning program for Fall and Spring. To complete your application, you must submit materials to two distinct bodies: the SJSU Graduate Admissions Office and the Urban and Regional Planning Admissions Committee. Each has its own timetable. Approval by both offices is necessary to gain admission to the program.

1. Materials to be submitted to the SJSU Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations Office
Fill out the on-line application form. The Master of Urban Planning (MUP) program at SJSU is listed on the online application form under Urban Planning. This form must be completed by September 30, 2013 for Spring 2014 consideration.
Submit one set of official transcripts from all higher educational institutions attended (even those where you did not get a degree) to the Graduate Admissions Office. All transcripts must be sealed and unopened in order to be acceptable as official documents. Do not send transcripts to the Department of Urban & Regional Planning. Copies of transcripts or opened transcripts will not be accepted. International students who must demonstrate competence in English should submit their test scores to the Graduate Admissions Office. The exams accepted by SJSU include the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), the International English Language Testing System (IELTS), and the Pearson Test of English (PTE). The university minimum entrance score for the TOEFL is 550 (paper based), 213 (computer based), or 80 (internet based). The minimum score required on the IELTS is 7.0 and the PTE 68.
2. Materials to be submitted to the Urban and Regional Planning Admissions Committee
- Applicants must submit to the department a single package that contains all the following

A statement indicating which semester you are applying for (e.g. Spring 2014) and your current contact information, including mailing address, phone number, and e-mail address. If you have previously applied to the program and are re-applying, please indicate for which semester you previously applied.
Three original, signed letters of recommendation that come from either university instructors who taught you or supervisors who managed you in paid or volunteer work. It is highly recommended that at least one letter come from a university instructor. If this is not possible, ask your letter writers to include an evaluation of your writing and analysis skills. These letters must be included in the package of materials submitted to the Urban and Regional Planning Admissions Committee, not to the SJSU Graduate Admissions Office. The department will only accept original, signed letters; faxed or emailed letters will not be accepted.
A short biographical statement of purpose (approximately 1.5 single-spaced typed pages) that indicates how a Master of Urban Planning degree will help you to achieve your career objectives.
Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores are required for applicants with a GPA below 3.0. Original scores from the testing office must be submitted in a sealed, unopened envelope or sent directly by ETS (the code for SJSU is 4687).
Do not send transcripts to the Department of Urban & Regional Planning. Official transcripts must be sent directly to Graduate Admissions & Program Evaluation (see address above).
