Course Learning Objectives
The department has approved official course learning objectives for this course. Learning objectives support the overall goal of each course and describe what information students should know, or what skills students should have learned by the end of the course.
Upon successful completion of the course, students will be able to:
- Use a systematic urban planning process to identify, analyze, communicate, and develop solutions to complex real world situations. The planning processes that students will learn to conduct include, at a minimum, the following components :
- Selecting, managing and applying appropriate research strategies for identifying the assets, problems and opportunities present in a community.
- Selecting, managing and applying appropriate outreach strategies for engaging diverse community stakeholders in the planning process. Community engagement strategies include, among others, stakeholder interviews, focus groups, door-to-door canvassing, community workshops and charrettes.
- Applying a collaborative, community-based process to develop a plan in partnership with a client community.
- Creating graphics (including base maps, analytical and conceptual diagrams, and illustrative plans), written materials and oral presentations to clearly communicate to a client community the results of the community assessment and plan development processes.
- Evaluating, selecting and developing the best means to disseminate the information synthesized in the plans. Dissemination methods include, among others, oral presentations at public meetings, visual displays, written reports, websites, and videos.
- Work effectively as members and leaders of diverse planning teams, and apply an understanding of interpersonal group dynamics to assure effective group action.
- Prepare a plan to effectively facilitate a meeting.
