College of Social Sciences Graduation and Department Celebration
On Thursday, May 24th at 9:00 a.m. SJSU’s College of Social Science will hold a commencement ceremony at Avaya Stadium. Each graduating student across all 13 college departments (which includes Urban & Regional Planning) will be recognized by name and have a chance to shake hands with the University President and other dignitaries (great photo opportunities!) You will also be “hooded” by faculty members on the stage – a special hood, that you’ll carry with you up to the stage, will be draped over you. This is the traditional way that American universities symbolically honor students who have earned masters or doctoral degrees. The commencement ceremony will be free to attend for all friends and family members of the graduating students. More details can be found at this site: http://www.sjsu.edu/commencement/
Urban & Regional Planning department will hold a celebration at a beautiful space generously provided to us by one of our CommUniverCity partners, St. Paul’s Methodist Church (405 South 10th St, San Jose – adjacent to the southeast corner of the SJSU campus). The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. and end by 4:30 p.m. Each student’s URBP-298 project will be described by their advisor so that the audience can appreciate your hard work. We will also have a terrific keynote speaker, Rosalynn Hughey (Director of the City of San Jose’s Department of Planning, Building & Code Enforcement) as well as distinguished guests, a student speaker, award announcements, and other details to make this a highly personalized experience for you and your guests. Following the ceremony, light refreshments will be served.
Why might I consider attending both ceremonies?
The University commencement at Avaya Stadium represents a grand tradition enjoyed by all American universities. The department celebration, later in the day, is more intimate: we’re putting together a wonderful event to bring your hard work and dedication to earning a masters degree to a happy conclusion. Both ceremonies allow memorable opportunities to savor a shared accomplishment and to introduce your friends and family to your student colleagues and faculty members.
We truly hope to see you at both events!
Do I need to wear graduation regalia (cap and gown) to both ceremonies?
Yes. It’s part of the excitement of the day and in keeping with long-standing tradition at American universities. Details about purchasing or renting regalia can be found here: http://www.sjsu.edu/commencement/faq/index.html#regalia
Please note that the master's gown is different from an undergraduate gown. The hood color for the MUP degree is citron and the tassel is black. Master's degree candidates wear the black tassel on the left side of the mortar board. Master's candidates carry their hoods on their right arms during the processional.
Is there a cost to attend the ceremonies?
The college-wide commencement ceremony at Avaya Stadium is free.
For the department celebration, graduating MUP students are admitted for free but must reserve a ticket. Children 10 and under will be admitted for free. Tickets for guests will be available for purchase for $10.00 each. Given the small size of the Bell Rose Garden, each graduating student is limited to a maximum of five guests. If you feel strongly about bringing more than five guests, please contact Rick Kos to discuss.
The last day for online ticket sales will be Thursday, May 17, 2018 (one week before the event). Tickets can be purchased at this site: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mup-graduation-celebration-tickets-45219435549
