Tuition and Fees

Tuition and fees are calculated for one full academic year (Fall '15 and Spring '16 semesters) and are based on a full-time course-load of 12 units.

Graduation and Retention Data

The retention rate is the percentage of first year students who return the next academic year. The graduation rates are the percentage of students who graduate within 3 or 5 years of enrolling.

*SJSU put severe restrictions on the total number of students that could be admitted to graduate programs during these academic years. No spring admissions occurred from Spring 2010-Spring 2013.

**SJSU does not prepare 4-year graduation rates. Our program offers a part-time option; students have up to 7 years to complete the MUP program according to university policy. Students on an entirely part-time (≤ 6 units per semester) degree path would take a minimum of 4 years to complete the program.

AICP Exam Data (Pass Rate within 3 Years of Graduation)

To become a certified planner, members of the American Planning Association (APA) must meet certain education and experience requirements and pass the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) Exam. The pass rate presented here is the percentage of test takers from SJSU who pass the examination within 3 years of graduating from our MUP program.

Student Achievement

The Department of Urban & Regional Planning assesses student achievement through three distinct mechanisms:

  1. Evaluation by internship supervisor;
  2. Evaluation of the comprehensive planning report using a common rubric;
  3. Performance of graduates on the AICP exam.

 

1. Internship Supervisor Evaluation Data

Every student who graduates with a MUP degree must complete a minimum of 180 hours of professional work experience. Internship supervisors are required to evaluate the student on a wide variety of planning knowledge and skills. A summary of internship evaluations for students is shown in the table below.

2. Evaluation of Comprehensive Planning Report

Every student who graduates from our MUP program completes a comprehensive professional planning report. This independent research project is evaluated by department faculty using a common rubric. A summary of student achievement on the culminating professional report for all students graduating in the 2012-2013 through 2014-2015 academic years is shown in the table below.
