Apply to Work With a Writing Fellow

Would you like to work with a Writing Fellow in your 100w course?
Writing Fellows are a form of embedded supplemental instruction, a unique and valuable resource for your students throughout the writing process. They are more skilled and knowledgeable than their peers—they are fully trained and supported by the Writing Center and the Writing Across the Curriculum program—and they work five hours per week exclusively with your students.

Faculty members and Writing Fellows work out a flexible schedule within the following guidelines:

  • Fellows work a total of 5 hours per week.
  • Fellows will spend 4-5 hours per week working directly with students.
  • Fellows can split those 4-5 hours between time spent in the classroom and time spent working with students outside of class.
  • Fellows are not allowed to grade or evaluate student work in any form.

Within these guidelines, faculty members and Writing Fellows work together to decide how this time should be allocated.

  • For example, one week your Fellow might come to both classes, work with small groups in class, and help with discussions and initial invention of ideas; the Fellow could then offer 2.5 hours of one-on-one help outside class.
  • The next week, your Fellow might come to no classes, offer two hours of one-on-one help outside class, offer two hours of research assistance in library, and attend a Fellows staff meeting.

You get the idea.
