Summary Report of Student Responses (2004) to NSSE
in the Context of WASC Criteria for Review

Executive Summary of Observations

Introduction

The National Survey of Student Engagement, co-sponsored by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Pew Forum on Undergraduate Education measures the extent to which students engage in educational practices which research has established as associated with high levels of learning and development. Each year NSSE collects information directly from undergraduates at hundreds of campuses. Review of student responses provides for the campus valuable insights regarding the extent to which students find their academic work challenging, the degree to which they are active learners, the extent to which students engage in an array of classroom and co-curricular activities, the quality of their experiences, and much more.

SJSU students completed the NSSE in 2002 and 2004. A summary report of the 2002 data was prepared for the WASC capacity review and is part of the institutional portfolio. In addition, the Academic Planning web site provides the 2002 means summary report. Below are links to the 2002 and 2004 summary benchmark reports.

This report takes a detailed look at the information obtained in 2004. Since the campus received, along with the aggregated data, a mapping of WASC CFR's to NSSE items, the 2004 analysis focused on the NSSE items mapped to the CFR's (primarily from Standard 2).

Presentation of Data

A comparison of the 2002 and 2004 data in the context of the NSSE benchmark groupings is provided. The benchmark groupings of NSSE items are

1) level of academic challenge (9 items),
2) active and collaborative learning (7 items),
3) student-faculty interactions (6 items),
4) supportive campus environment (6 items),
5) enriching educational experiences - 04 data only (11 items).

In addition to demographic data and responses to the 2004 NSSE items from SJSU students, information is available (2004) for students from universities (32) that are a part of the American Democracy Project (ADP) which is an initiative directed by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), as well as students from participating masters granting institutions, and the entire NSSE sample. To enable both internal and relative comparisons, the tables presented contain 2004 information for:

WASC Standards & Criteria for Review (CFR)

The CFR's that NSSE items have been mapped to are found primarily under WASC standard 2 which pertains to achieving educational objectives through core functions. The standard reads:

The institution achieves its institutional purposes and attains its educational objectives through the core functions of teaching and learning, scholarship and creative activity, and support for student learning. It demonstrates that these core functions are performed effectively and that they support one another in the institution’s efforts to attain educational effectiveness.

The student perspective found in responses to NSSE items related to educational effectiveness is an important one and provides yet another point for triangulation with data collected by the student experience committee specifically for the WASC educational effectiveness review.

Executive Summary of Observations

With respect to a comparison between the 2002 (return rate 38%) and 2004 NSSE data, SJSU maintained or improved in each of the four benchmark groupings where comparisons were possible. Student responses are strongest, and comparable to comparison groups for the benchmark grouping of level of academic challenge. The weakest areas were student-faculty interactions and the grouping labeled supportive campus environment.

With respect to the SJSU data from 2004, the return rate was about 33%. In summary, the pattern of responses from SJSU students was frequently similar to those from comparison groups. A comparison in terms of SJSU's percentile ranking conveys relative information for each NSSE benchmark grouping. It should be kept in mind that the sample is small and the demographics not fully reflective of the campus particularly with respect to ethnicity. The following are highlights from the data.

Comparison of 2002 and 2004 NSSE Date in Benchmark Groupings

The benchmark data are reported as a score drawn from responses to items in each grouping with the scale ranging to 100. The benchmark groupings for which SJSU has comparable 2002 and 2004 data are

1) level of academic challenge (9 items),
2) active and collaborative learning (7 items),
3) student-faculty interactions (6 items),
4) supportive campus environment (6 items),
5) enriching educational experiences - 04 data only (11 items).

Note: Due to response option changes, the Enriching Educational Experiences (EEE) benchmark for 2004 is not directly comparable to prior years. In addition, as of 2004, Enriching Educational Experiences now includes a measure of whether or not a student participated in a learning community. The NSSE Benchmark recalculation report specifically notes that the current items (comprising EEE) are not comparable with prior years. An opportunity for comparison will not be available until the next administration of NSSE at SJSU.

As you will notice in the bar charts below, responses from SJSU student responses are strongest, and comparable to comparison groups for the benchmark grouping of level of academic challenge. The weakest areas were student-faculty interactions and the grouping labeled supportive campus environment.

The table directly below presents the 2004 comparative grouping information in terms of standard scores (essentially z scores) and percentiles.

Level of academic challenge

The NSSE benchmark report notes that challenging intellectual and creative work is central to student learning and collegiate quality. Colleges and universities promote high levels of student achievement by emphasizing the importance of academic effort and setting high expectations for student performance. Note: data are reported as a score drawn from responses to items in this grouping with the scale ranging to 100.

chart_ac-challenge

Active and collaborative learning

The NSSE benchmark report notes that students learn more when they are intensely involved in their education and asked to think about what they are learning in different settings. Collaborating with others in solving problems or mastering difficult material prepares students for the messy, unscripted problems they will encounter daily during and after college. Note: data are reported as a score drawn from responses to items in this grouping with the scale ranging to 100.

chart_activelearn

Student-faculty interactions

The NSSE benchmark report notes that students learn firsthand how experts think about and solve practical problems by interacting with faculty members inside and outside the classroom. As a result, their teachers become role models, mentors, and guides for continuous, life-long learning. Note: NSSE Benchmark recalculation values for SJSU and comparison groups are used below. Also note, data are reported as a score drawn from responses to items in this grouping with the scale ranging to 100.

chart_sfinteract

Supportive campus environment

NSSE benchmark report notes that students perform better and are more satisfied at colleges that are committed to their success as well as the working and social relations among different groups on campus. Note: data are reported as a score drawn from responses to items in this grouping with the scale ranging to 100.

chart_supenv

Enriching Educational Experiences

NSSE benchmark report notes that complementary learning opportunities in and out of classroom augment academic programs. Diversity experiences teach students valuable things about themselves and others. Technology facilitates collaboration between peers and instructors. Internships, community service, and senior capstone courses provide opportunities to integrate and apply knowledge.

Due to response option changes, the Enriching Educational Experiences (EEE) benchmark for 2004 is not directly comparable to prior years. Note: data are reported as a score drawn from responses to items in this grouping with the scale ranging to 100.

2004 NSSE Data in the Context of Educational Effectiveness

Note: When a NSSE item was mapped to more than one CFR, a decision was made with respect to which CFR the item most closely matched so that each item's data is reported only once below.

CFR 2.2: Graduation Requirements
CFR 2.5: Academic Programs
CFR 2.10: Student Assessment
CFR 2.11: Co-curricular Programs
CFR 2.13: Student Support Services
CFR 1.5: Diversity

CFR 2.2: All degrees - undergraduate and graduate - awarded by the institution are clearly defined in terms of entry-level
requirements and in terms of levels of student achievement necessary for graduation that represent more than simply an accumulation of courses or credits. The NSSE items below are the ones identified as related to CFR 2.2.

From a relative perspective, across the items related to CFR 2.2, SJSU student responses are remarkably comparable to all three comparison groups. The observation on the positive side is that noticeable gains are being made when seniors are compared to first-year students particularly with respect to working with classmates outside of class (on assignments), and synthesizing ideas and concepts across courses. On the negative side, whether looking at SJSU data or responses aggregated for comparison groups, students engage in little reading outside of class.

From an internal perspective, the area of greatest gain for SJSU (comparing first-year to senior students) was that of interactions among students outside of class in preparation for assignments.

CFR 2.5: The institution’s academic programs actively involve students in learning, challenge them to achieve high expectations, and provide them with appropriate and ongoing feedback about their performance and how it can be improved. The NSSE items below are the ones identified as related to CFR 2.5.

From a relative perspective, across the items related to CFR 2.5, SJSU student responses are similar to comparison groups in general. The exception is found in the responses to item 1c. This item pertains to preparation of drafts of a paper/assignment before turning it in. Among the comparison groups, there is a decrease in those responding 'very often' when looking at first-year responses compared to seniors. The change in the SJSU data is an increase in those responding 'very often'. Interpretation, without follow up, is difficult since that increase could reflect a response among faculty (asking for another draft) to poor quality in student work or it could reflect a practice adopted (preparing multiple drafts) among students over the course of their studies.

The observation on the positive side is that noticeable gains are being made when seniors are compared to first-year students with respect to working on a paper or project that requires integrating ideas or information from various sources. In fact, the gain among SJSU students responding 'very often' is substantial (27% to 55%). Another area where noticeable change is observed is with responses to the item asking 'the extent to which your examinations during the current school year have challenged you to do your best work'. Comparing SJSU first-year and senior responses in the category 'very much' the change more than doubles (11% to 26%). Once again attribution for this change is difficult and could result from increasing expectations from faculty but perhaps is compounded by the following observation. On the negative side, the majority (nearly 80%) of both first-year students and seniors report at least sometimes coming to class without completing readings or assignments.

NSSE item 1c: How often students prepared two or more drafts of a paper or assignment before turning it in.

CFR 2.10: Regardless of mode of program delivery, the institution regularly identifies the characteristics of its students and assesses their needs, experiences, and levels of satisfaction. This information is used to help shape learning-centered environment and to actively promote student success. The NSSE items below are the ones identified as related to CFR 2.10.

From a relative perspective, across the items related to CFR 2.10, SJSU student responses are similar to comparison groups in areas related to coursework experiences. Comparing first-year responses with seniors, the frequency of coursework emphasizing memorization of facts decreases while analyzing and synthesizing ideas increases. In contrast, the pattern for SJSU respondents related to coursework that emphasizes 'Making judgments about the value of information, arguments, or methods' differs from comparison groups in that first-year and senior responses are similar while comparison groups show an increase.

In the area of satisfaction, there is reason for concern. With respect to the quality of relationships with both other students and faculty, SJSU students (both first-year and seniors) respond less positively than students in comparison groups. When turning to the quality of relationships with administrative personnel and offices, the differences in SJSU and comparison group responses is even greater. This observation is not an anomaly as it surfaced repeatedly in all data sets examined by the student experience committee.

Finally, with respect to the question would you again choose SJSU there is a decrease from first-year to senior responses in the proportion choosing 'definitely yes'.
