Evolution of Review Focus

The overall focus of our WASC review has been to examine critically the organizational structures and processes that enable the institution to define objectives, to set priorities, and to align resources with priorities. Within our proposal to WASC we identified a range of issues which, if given in-depth review would be of value to the campus and provide WASC with important insights to SJSU. The decision regarding which issues to focus on was deferred to a point in time when the University established a steering committee for the capacity review process and was able to seek input from the campus. In the Spring of 2003 a planning group hosted a campus forum which subsequently led the steering committee to focus attention in two areas: student development and success and enrollment management.

Following the Capcity and Preparatory Review, feedback from the visiting team and progress in the area of strategic planning led to a more holistic and integrated view of enrollment management and student development and success. Finally, following preparation of our special visit report for WASC which focused on strategic planning, assessment, and enrollment management, the campus turned another corner in its evolution toward the goals identified in our strategic planning process. In January of 2006 the President and Provost hosted a 'Greater Expectations' retreat modeled on the work of the American Association of Colleges and Universities. This event had a significant impact on both campus leaders (faculty, staff, students, administrators) and those engaged in preparation of our educational effectiveness report.

While the capacity review focused our attention on the organizational structures, policies, practices and procedures in place to achieve our mission, we found that our view with respect to educational effectiveness had evolved to embrace quite challenging but potentially transformational concepts. Thus, the Educational Effectiveness report we prepared for WASC was comprised of essays which examine three broad areas: Integrative Learning, Community Connections, and Inclusive Excellence.
