Managing Pop-Up Blockers

Background

After you log in to the WebCMS or Spartan Faculty Web Wizard system, the system tries to open a new browser window where you can work on your site. Since this new window is opened by a program, not directly by the user, it is considered a "pop-up" window.

Since many pop-up windows are unwanted advertisements, there are utilities designed to prevent them from opening. They are called "pop-up blockers". Pop-up blockers will also prevent WebCMS and Spartan Faculty Web Wizard windows from opening.

If you continue to see the login screen after typing your name and password, but don't see an error message, it is usually because a pop-up blocker prevented the next window from opening.

Pop-up blockers can be found in Web browsers, toolbars, and other software. In order to use WebCMS or Spartan Faculty Web Wizard, you need to disable all pop-up blockers or configure them to allow pop-up windows from http://webcms.sjsu.edu . This is because even if you disable the pop-up blocker in Internet Explorer, for example, the pop-up blocker in the Google toolbar can still prevent needed windows from opening.

Disabling pop-up blockers

See the following sections for specific instructions on disabling a pop-up blocker. Note: You may need to disable more than one.

Internet Explorer (Windows)

If Internet Explorer's built-in pop-up blocker is preventing a window from opening, you will see a screen like this:
