Site Redesign

Q: Why is the website being redesigned?

A: It has been more than a decade since SJSU’s website was redesigned. Since then, web technology and web design have greatly evolved. The redesign will result in a site with improved functionality and a design that show cases the university as a premier institution.

Q: Who created the new design?

A: The design was conceived of and developed by students, combined with input from a broad array of campus stakeholders. Instead of hiring an outside consultant, the university engaged Design Creature, an SJSU student design studio led by Associate Professor Connie Hwang.

Q: Why did we change the current Website Content Management Systems (WCMS)?

A: In order to meet needs based on user feedback and to offer growth potential.

Q: What is the new Website Content Management System (WCMS)?

A: The new Content Management System is OU Campus from OmniUpdate (OU).

Q:  How can I move my website to the new design?

A:  If your website is inside the current Website Content Management System (WebCMS), your website will be migrated for you to OU Campus when you are ready. All of the content will be automatically migrated to the new templates. You will have an opportunity to review your website and make changes before it goes live.

If you are hosting your website outside of WebCMS, please contact university web designer Christina Olivas to request the new SJSU template kit.

Q: How soon can I migrate or create a website inside OU Campus?

A: OU Campus will available starting Monday, September 26, 2011. Visit SJSU Events for upcoming training sessions.

Q: Will training be provided?

A: Yes, the Web Services Unit will be providing training on OU Campus.

  • Classroom Training: The Web Services Unit will offer ongoing workshops to train campus webmasters and content editors in using OU Campus. Visit SJSU Events for upcoming training sessions.
  • Online Training: The Web Services Unit will also develop online training modules that are available 24x7. The online training modules are tentatively planned to be available by November 1, 2011.
  • Consultation: The Web Services Unit will continue to provide consultation to answer specific questions related to accessibility, website traffic analysis, Search Engine Optimization (SEO), content strategy and information hierarchy.

Q: Will everyone need to move to the new design?

A: The university encourages and welcomes the entire campus community to use the new templates and content management system, but it is not required at this time. The new templates and OU Campus will help ensure consistent branding across all SJSU websites, increase site credibility and provide access to resources for departments to better manage their sites.
