Recommendations

The Web Oversight Committee discussed the pros and cons of sub-domain hosting on Wednesday, October 1, 2008. Providing a consistent navigation URL for users and consistent branding for the university were the keys factors the committee considered. The committee made the following recommendations on the subject of sub-domain hosting:

  1. Websites developed and maintained in the Content Management System be hosted inside the domain www.sjsu.edu
  2. Web Services be assigned the task of hosting sub-domains that already exist strictly for redirection purposes, so that inbound links can be gracefully directed
  3. Campus units (including departments, colleges and divisions) be encouraged to have websites inside www.sjsu.edu, and to follow the naming convention www.sjsu.edu/unitname

The Web Oversight Committee understands that hosting websites as sub-domains may be necessary in rare cases. The committee would strongly encourage campus units to explore having a web presence inside www.sjsu.edu before hosting a sub-domain.
