S7 Teaching about Religion and the Bible in Public Schools (Alumni Sci 220)
This session will prepare SBL and AAR members to engage the legal, political, and pedagogical issues that arise in connection with teaching about religion and the Bible in public schools. Attention will also be given to the need for local scholars to contribute to state standards and to review proposed textbook materials in school systems that offer religion and Bible electives. SBL executive director Kent Richards will cover the legal and political issues, and Bruce Grelle will address the pedagogical challenges: lack of teacher training and resources, and community misunderstanding of the academic study of religion and the Bible. For more information contact SBL: moira.bucciarelli@sbl-site.org or (404) 727-9484.
