AAR/WR Awards Competitions

AAR/WR 2010 Student Paper Competition:

AAR/WR invites its graduate student members to compete for best paper awards. Eligible entries must be papers already accepted for presentation on the 2010 AAR/WR program; winning entrants must be registered for the 2010 conference and present their papers in person. Only registered graduate students who have had a paper accepted and will present this paper at the March 2010 meeting at Arizona State University are eligible. Awards will be given to the papers that present the most intellectually sophisticated and rigorous treatment of a topic related to the conference theme. To be considered for this award AAR/WR graduate students who have accepted papers must attend the 2010 AAR/WR conference and present the paper in person. Awards will be announced and given at the WECSOR reception. To be considered for this award students should send an e-copy of their finished papers to Arisika Razak, President, AAR/WR (email: arazak@ciis.edu): Deadline for or submissions is no later than March 1, 2010.

2009 AAR/WR Award Winners in Student Paper Competition:

First Award of $ 300 to Seth Clippard for "The Conversation Between Deep Ecology and Buddhism" (Arizona State University)

Second Award of $ 200 to Sarah Robinson for "Islam, Ecology and Environmental Justice" ( Claremont Graduate University)

Third Award of $ 100 to Patricia Power for "Blurring the Boundaries: The American Messianic Jew" (Arizona State University)

AAR/WR invites its independent scholar members to compete for best paper awards. Eligible entries must be papers already accepted for presentation on the 2010 AAR/WR program; winning entrants must be registered for the 2010 conference and present their papers in person. Only registered independent scholars who have had a paper accepted and will present this paper at the March 2010 meeting at Arizona State University are eligible. Awards will be given to the papers that present the most intellectually sophisticated and rigorous treatment of a topic related to the conference theme. To be considered for this award AAR/WR independent scholars who have accepted papers must attend the 2010 AAR/WR conference and present the paper in person. Awards will be announced and given at the WECSOR reception. SBL/PCR Awards Competitions


All participants are required to submit a paper to the appropriate unit chair by October 2, 2009. Faculty members are encouraged to nominate students or recent graduates with the understanding that the student or graduate must submit a paper for consideration.


Regional Scholar Award Program
Award: Papers in the areas of Hebrew Bible/History of Israel, or New Testament/Early
Judaism or Qumran. One candidate will be selected and his/her paper will be submitted
for national Society’s Regional Scholar Award Selection Committee.
Requirement: Submit paper to one of the regional program units by October 2, 2009.
Designate the paper as “Submission for Regional Scholar Program.” Send a copy of the
paper to: Regional Coordinator, Mignon R. Jacobs by December 1, 2009.
Eligibility: SBL members who have earned a doctoral degree within the past four years or
who is at the ABD stage of a doctoral program. Paper must be accepted to one of the
regional program units for 2010 conference.
The Regional Selection Committee will use the following criteria for evaluation:
Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly resources and publications related to the topic of the paper
Use and knowledge of the primary sources related to the topic of the paper
Clarity of written expression
Use of scholarly practices of annotation
Originality of ideas and solutions developed in the paper
Critical thinking
Presentation—Clarity and skills in interacting with the audience

The regional candidate will be announced by April 15, 2010. That candidate will receive
$400 from SBLPCR to support scholarly work. The Regional coordinator will forward
the name of the candidate, paper and CV to the Society’s Regional Scholar Award
Selection.
National recognition: The Society’s Regional Scholar Award Selection Committee will select up
to six scholars and notify them by August 31, 2010. The Regional Scholar will:
· receive the Regional scholar award of $1000 to support attendance at the SBL Annual
meeting
· submit his/her paper for consideration to the appropriate national program unit for the
2011 meeting.
· attend the Regional Scholar dinner at the national SBL Annual Meeting and briefly
summarize (2-3 minutes) his/her paper


Student Essay Award
Award: One prize of $250 in one of the following areas: Hebrew Bible/History of Israel, or
New Testament/Early Judaism, Qumran
Requirement: Paper must be submitted to one of the program units by October 2, 2009 and
designated as a “Student Essay Prize Submission.” Professors wishing to nominate
doctoral or master’s students may submit papers via email to the Regional Coordinator,
Mignon R. Jacobs by December 1, 2009.
Eligibility: SBL member. Papers accepted to one of the program units for 2010.
Criteria for evaluation:
Demonstrated knowledge of scholarly resources and publications related to the topic of the paper
Use and knowledge of the primary sources related to the topic of the paper
Clarity of written expression
Use of scholarly practices of annotation
Originality of ideas and solutions developed in the paper


Ineligibility for Award: The same paper submitted for both awards; the same paper submitted
more than once for any award. An individual submitting multiple papers for consideration
within the same program year.
