SJSU Home : Wireless Laptop Pilot Project : About the Project : Project Background
Project BackgroundImportant advances in computing have significantly changed the world community. The 21st Century workplace requires highly productive citizens who are able to use technology tools effectively to communicate with a diverse world community, manage complex tasks, and to collaborate with colleagues across the hall and across the ocean. The Wireless Laptop Pilot Project evidences a commitment by the university to preparing students for leadership positions in the new, changing world community. The Wireless Laptop Pilot Project is an Academic Technology initiative funded through a lottery grant. In April 2002, Apple Computer donated and facilitated two days of Discovery during which the faculty and staff considered the impact of wireless technologies on the educational process. The vision, goals and objectives of the project were developed during the Discovery process. The School of Art and Design, the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, and the Departments of Child and Adolescent Development, Communicative Disorders, and the Department of Educational Leadership in the College of Education have assumed a leadership position with the integration of wireless technology into their curriculum. All classrooms in these programs have access to the Internet and network resources through a wireless network. Beginning Fall Semester 2003, students will bring laptops to classes as required instructional material. The faculty and the staffs commitment to the Wireless Laptop Pilot Project can be evidenced in the completion of more than 1400 professional development hours related to the integration of wireless technology. The Wireless Laptop Pilot Projects participating faculty are preparing students to be successful in this very innovative, constantly changing 21st Century world. The wireless network implemented by University Computing and Telecommunications is based on the 802.11b wireless network standard. The wireless network is accessible in 40 classrooms in the six buildings used by the Wireless Laptop Pilot Project programs. The Cisco 1200 Wireless Access Point provides enough flexibility to provide 802.11g networking in the future without installing new access points. BlueSocket provides security for the network. San José State University is committed to preparing students to take leadership positions in the world community. Technology is an essential and integral component of that new world community and is evidenced in the student experience at the university. The Wireless Laptop Pilot Project is one program of many that is evidence of this commitment to excellence on the San José State University campus.
