Today's fast-paced world leaves many of us feeling overwhelmed and prone to depression, anxiety and health problems. UMASS Medical School's Center for Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program, brought to SJSU by adjunct faculty Rochelle McLaughlin, is designed to teach individuals how to manage daily stress, and live a happier, more balanced life.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) can complement the medical management of chronic or acute conditions and has proven effective in treating many conditions, including anxiety, depression, heart disease, insomnia, fibromyalgia, and cancer.

Topics Include:

  • Learn coping skills to manage stress, anxiety, depression, and symptoms of illness

Student Testimonials

"I learned how to be in the moment - how to get there and how to not freak out if I don't. Dana is a wonderful teacher."
- Kathy Dolan, instructor: Dana Rysavy

"Dana is so respectful of her students. She practices loving kindness. Dana really had my back and helped me with my limitations. She is the best."
- Alice Bittner, instructor: Dana Rysavy

"The continued exposure to this combination of mindfulness mediation and yoga is just great for my mood regulation."
- Nancy Bomberinstructor: Dana Rysavy

"I always look forward to my mindful yoga class with Dana! She creates such a safe, thoughtful space to practice mindful yoga. She has encouraged and supported me in being more accepting of my body. Dana is especially good at meeting a variety of needs in our class -from the novice to the more advanced. I am profoundly gratefuly for Dana and her commitment to her craft."
- Coni Cullimoreinstructor: Dana Rysavy

"Reflecting upon the [MBSR] course and what I learned about myself, it was the catalyst for the beginning of a personal and spiritual awakening....it gave me permission to slow down."Sydney Shiroyama, MBSR Spring 2017, instructor: Rochelle McLaughlin

"The interesting thing is the habits I have developed through participation in this MBSR course are not exactly what I had imagined, in that they are much more subtle in the actual act but profound in the effect they have on my day-to-day life."
Joe R. Shannon, MBSR Spring 2017, instructor: Rochelle McLaughlin

"This course changed my life in a variety of ways and I’m excited to see how the inclusion of mindfulness in my life evolves and how it impacts me in the future."
Josh Sokolski, MBSR Spring 2017, instructor: Rochelle McLaughlin

"MBSR has had a long-lasting impression on my interactions with the world, myself, and my practice. I learned that I can fall victim to tracking my growth in a way that is all-too-focused on an idea of arrival or mastery."
Victoria Luby, MBSR Spring 2017, instructor: Rochelle McLaughlin

"Mindfulness increased my awareness of my habitual explanatory style of victimization, internal and externalized reactions to difficulty, and also fostered a newfound sense of self-acceptance and gentleness. I am profoundly grateful for the sense of empowerment and cultivation of compassion that a regular meditation practice continues to engender in me."
- Catherine Sheehan, MBSR Spring 2017, instructor: Rochelle McLaughlin
