Our Policies

Program Philosophy

The Writing Center is committed to treating you, your questions, and your assignments with respect. We recognize that every student is unique and that every assignment is different. We will make our best attempt to work with you to improve your writing.

Tutoring Policy

1.     You must be currently registered and enrolled at SJSU to use the Writing Center's services.

2.     All tutoring must be done in the Writing Center (Clark Hall suites 126/124).

3.     Writing Specialists will not discuss a grade you have received or anticipate a grade you may receive.

4.     Writing Specialists will not write your papers for you or perform line-by-line editing. The Writing Center is not an editing and/or proofreading service. You cannot leave a paper to be corrected by a tutor. You must be present and prepared to learn.

5.     You must bring all necessary materials with you to your appointment. Bring the assignment you want to work on and any prompts or other information regarding the assignment. Please note that you must bring printouts of all material - tutors will not work with documents on laptop computers.

6.     You must check in with the administrator when you arrive for an appointment.

7.     Tutoring sessions are 30 minutes long. You can make one appointment per day, with a maximum of two appointments total per week. Hour-long appointments are available only in special circumstances with the approval of the Writing Center administrator and Director.

8.     If you are more than five minutes late, your appointment will be given to the next person on the waiting list, and you will be marked as a no-show for that appointment.

9.     If you cannot keep an appointment, you must cancel online before the appointment is scheduled to begin. You may also e-mail us or call the Writing Center at (408) 924-2308. If you miss two appointments (late or no-show) without cancelling, you will be blocked from the online scheduling system and limited to drop-in appointments for the remainder of that semester. Drop-in appointments are on a space-available basis, and you cannot book them in advance.

10.   You may not use a cell phone during your appointment.

11.   No food or drink -- except bottled water -- is permitted in the Writing Center.

12.   The Writing Center cannot accommodate children. Please do not bring children to the Writing Center.

Drop-In Tutoring Policy

1.     Writing Specialists are sometimes available for drop-in assistance on a first-come, first-served basis. We cannot guarantee the availability of drop-in tutoring. The only way to be guaranteed a tutoring session is to schedule it in advance.

2..     Tutoring sessions are 30 minutes long. If no other students are waiting and the tutor is still available, you may be able to stay for an additional 30 minutes, but this is not guaranteed.

3.     If you have not previously registered with the Writing Center, you must do so prior to your drop-in session.

4.     Writing Specialists have the right to refuse to work on a paper that is due in less than three hours.

Workshop Policy

1.     You must be registered with the Writing Center to attend our workshops. If you haven't already registered with us, please go here and follow the 'Click here to register' link.

2.     Late-comers, registered or not, will not be seated. Workshops start promptly at the scheduled time. If you are late, you will not be able to attend the workshop session. No exceptions.

3.     Do not use cell phones during the workshop. Please set all cell phones to silent or turn them off.

4.     No food or drink -- except bottled water -- is permitted in workshops.

5.     Children of any age are not permitted at our workshops. For fire safety reasons, we can only accommodate a certain number of people in each room. Please do not bring children or any additional guests with you.

6.     Proof of workshop attendance, if needed, can be obtained at the Writing Center after each workshop. Confirmation slips will only be issued on the day of the workshop. Only one confirmation slip will be given to each student.
