Our PoliciesProgram Philosophy
The
Writing Center is committed to treating you, your questions, and your
assignments with respect. We recognize that every student is unique and that
every assignment is different. We will make our best attempt to work with you to
improve your writing.
Tutoring Policy
1. You must be currently
registered and enrolled at SJSU to use the Writing
Center services.
2. All tutoring must be done in the Writing
Center (Clark Hall suites 126/124).
3. Writing Specialists will not discuss a grade
you have received or anticipate a grade you may receive.
4. The Writing Center is not an editing
and/or proofreading service. Writing Specialists will not write your papers for
you or perform line-by-line editing. You cannot leave a paper to be
corrected by a tutor. You must be present and prepared to learn.
5. You
must bring
all necessary materials with you to your appointment. Bring a
hard copy of the writing you want to work on and any prompts or
other information regarding the assignment. Please note that you must bring printouts of
all material - tutors will not work with documents on laptop
computers.
6. You must check in with the administrator when you arrive for an
appointment.
7. Tutoring sessions are 30 minutes long. You
can make one appointment per day, with a maximum of two appointments made in advance per
week. Hour-long appointments are available only in special circumstances with
the approval of the Writing Center administrator and Director.
8. If you are more than five minutes late, your
appointment will be given to the next person on the waiting list, and you will
be marked as a no-show for that appointment.
9. If you cannot make your scheduled appointment, you
must cancel before the appointment is scheduled to begin.
If you miss two appointments (late or no-show) without cancelling in advance, you will be blocked
from the online scheduling system and any future appointments canceled. You will
then be limited to drop-in only appointments for the rest of that
semester. Drop-in appointments cannot be made in advance and may not
always be available, especially during peak hours.
10. You may not use a cell phone during your
appointment.
11. No food or drink -- except bottled
water -- is permitted in the Writing Center.
12. The Writing Center cannot accommodate children. Please do not bring children to the Writing Center.
13. If you are rude, disruptive, or
disrespectful, the Writing Specialist has the right to end the tutoring session
at any time.
Drop-In Tutoring Policy
1. Writing Specialists are
sometimes available for drop-in assistance on a first-come, first-served basis.
We cannot guarantee the availability of drop-in tutoring. The only way to be guaranteed a tutoring session
is to schedule it in advance.
2. Tutoring sessions are 30 minutes long. If no other
students are waiting and the tutor is still available, you may be able to stay for an additional 30
minutes, but this is not guaranteed.
3. If you have not
previously registered with the Writing Center, you must do so prior to your drop-in session.
4. Writing Specialists have the right to refuse to work on a paper
that is due in less than three hours.
Workshop Policy
1. You must be registered with the
Writing Center to attend our workshops. If you haven't already registered
with us, please go here
and follow the "Click here to register" link, then fill
out the form to sign up.
2.
Late-comers, registered or not, will not be seated. Workshops start promptly at
the scheduled time. If you are more than two minutes late, you will not be able to
attend the workshop session. No exceptions.
3. Do not
use cell phones, laptops, or PDAs during the workshop. Please set
all cell phones to silent or turn them off.
4. No food
or drink --
except bottled water
-- is permitted in workshops.
5. Children of
any age are not permitted at our workshops.
6. Do not bring
any additional guests with you. For fire safety reasons, we can only accommodate a
certain number of people in each room.
7. If you need proof that you
attended a workshop, you must come to the Writing Center immediately after the
workshop and talk to the Admin for a confirmation slip. Confirmation slips will
only be given out on the day of the workshop. Only one confirmation slip
will be given to each student.
