Student Services

Welcome to the Student Services section of our website. Below you'll find information about our primary services: one-on-one tutoring and workshops. We also provide conversation groups, group tutoring, in-class workshops, and a wealth of information available for download such as handouts and video tutorials on numerous writing topics. Links to these sections of our site are displayed to the left of each page.

Tutoring

Tutoring is available on a drop-in basis or by appointment. All appointments are made using our Online Reservation System. The SJSU Writing Center is staffed by professional instructors and upper-division or graduate-level Writing Specialists who have met a rigorous GPA requirement and are well trained to assist all students at all levels within all disciplines. Writing Specialists will help you find a topic, organize your paper, cite sources, avoid plagiarism, and use correct grammar and punctuation. We understand the special needs of students learning English as a second language and returning students, and we're experts in all phases of writing.

"After my first visit to the Writing Center, I was so thankful they were there. The Writing Specialists are so skillful. They know exactly what you need and how to help."
- Graduate Student (Teaching English as a Second Language)

Workshops

Our one-hour workshops are designed to meet the needs of SJSU students. We offer workshops on a wide variety of topics, such as citation styles (APA, MLA), grammar, punctuation, essay exams, and many more. You may view our schedule of workshops and register online, over the phone, or at the Writing Center.

Conversation Groups

Conversation Groups are informal discussions led by a Writing Center facilitator about specific topics or classes. These conversations are not workshops, nor tutoring sessions, and they follow no set curriculum. As a participant, you should come prepared to ask questions and to hear views or comments that may be different from, and even in opposition to, your own.
