On the Cover

President Jon Whitmore has wasted no time getting to know the campus, its people, its issues and the larger Silicon Valley community since his arrival last August. Beyond requisite meetings with staff and faculty, he made time to visit the mailroom, speak with students, ride with university police officers and take a turn on the riding mower at the stadium. Off campus, he is meeting with area CEOs and discussing new city/university partnerships with San José Mayor Chuck Reed. Cover photo by Sharon Hall.

Cultivating a Leader

By Jody Ulate. With values formed in America's heartland, new president Jon Whitmore is a tested leader who will help San José State to achieve its aspirations for 2015 and beyond.

Science, Not Snake Oil

By Mansi Bhatia. Scientists like Professor Julio Soto have to think the impossible -- e.g. that a snake venom deadly to humans might also be able to help us fight cancer.
