Biology 2: Spring 2002 Library Assignment

BIO 2 Animal Biology: Spring 2002 Library Assignment 1: 25 points

Later in this semester, you will design and execute an experiment on the behavior of planaria. As part of the design process, you are to do some background reading (a partial chapter in a book on electronic reserve in our library) to find out something about their behavior. In this assignment, you will write a two-paragraph report:

1. Read the article on Electronic Reserve in our library.
2. Decide on a type of behavior that you would like to examine.
3. This assignment must be word processed and double spaced. Handwritten material will not be accepted.
   1. Put your name (Last, First) in the upper left hand corner. In the upper right hand corner, put "BIOL 2". Just below your name, specify your lab section.
   2. Write a short paragraph describing the type of behavior and specify a hypothesis that you wish to test.
   3. Write a short paragraph describing how this type of behavior might help the planarian to survive in a pond.
   4. A total of two paragraphs is required. (See grading rubric on back)

During lab in three weeks (18/20 Feb.), your lab instructor will collect the assignments and redistribute them to your peers so that everyone will "peer edit" the work of a fellow classmate.

The best thing you can do to help your classmate is to provide serious critical review of her/his work using the guidelines provided by the rubric. A good editor will help to state the hypothesis, and other ideas, more clearly, concisely, and accurately. Ultimately, after good editing, your grade will be better than if if no editing had been done. Once you have been "peer edited", you will have one week to turn in the final version of this assignment. The final draft will be graded by your lab instructor, due 25/27 Feb.
