ASSIGNMENT THREE­ - PART I: LOCATING MAGAZINE ARTICLES IN THE POPULAR PRESS

 

I. Find Readers' Guide to Periodical Literature (AI 3 R48) on the second floor, King Library.

 

2. Search the years 1890-1925 under the surname (last name) of your person, for example:

                                                 Sinclair, Upton

 

3. In the space provided below, write down the citations for three articles that look useful, for example:

                    Is the Jungle true? Ind. 60: 1129-33. My. 17, '06.

4. Use the information in the front of the volume of Readers' Guide to locate the initials of the periodicals
(magazines) and write down the full name of each periodical after each citation you have listed above, for
example:

5. Use the Catalog to determine if the King Library owns the periodicals.

     Select Title      and type the name of the periodical, for example:         Independent

 

6. Find one periodical King Library owns, write down the title of the periodical, and copy down the
location, call number, and information on what years the library has:

7. Go to the Lower Level and find the periodical article.

 

8. Make a copy. Attach the copy to this sheet when you turn in the assignment.

 

 

ASSIGNMENT THREE­ - PART II: LOCATING JOURNAL ARTICLES IN THE SCHOLARLY

LITERATURE

1. JSTOR is a scholarly archive that includes many core journals in history.  From the Library homepage [http://www.sjlibrary.org], select "Articles & Databases" from the left menu. 

When the next screen appears, select "A-Z titles"

and then click on "J." 

Finally click on "JSTOR."  

 

 

Once on the JSTOR main page, select "search." 

Using "fulltext" put the author's first and last name "NEAR" each other. 

   [Consult "TIPS" on the top of the JSTOR page to figure out how to do this.]

Next check "History Journals" and check both "articles" and "reviews." 

Then, execute your search. 

When your results appear, click on "Highest Scoring Items." 

Write down the full citation for one that looks interesting, using the "Cite Your Sources" format.

2. Scan the interesting scholarly article you found in JSTOR by looking at a few pages of the full text.  Compare this article to the article from the popular press in the Part I of this assignment.  On the basis of your comparison of the two articles, what are the major differences between popular magazine articles and scholarly journal articles?

3. From the Library homepage [http://www.sjlibrary.org], select "Articles & Databases" from the left menu. 

When the next screen appears, select "A-Z titles"

                                and then scroll down to "America: History and Life."

To access America: History and Life, select "click here to access your subscription" and then click on the blue bar for America: History and Life. 

Once in the database, select CLIO Notes.

Use the left menu in CLIO Notes to find some information about the progressive era. 

Select an event from the chronology and an article from the topics that is closely related to your person.

            A. Write down the name of the event you selected from the chronology:

4. Return to the Catalog, search by the title of the journal, and note the call number if King Library owns the journal. [Hint: In the Catalog select "Title" and type the name of the journal.]

 

5. Check the Electronic Journals list and note whether we also have the article in electronic format. .

From the main Library page [http://www.sjlibrary.org], select "Research" from the top center.  When the next screen appears, select "SJSU Electronic Journals List" from the left menu.

 

 

 

 

 

6. Use the guide sheet called "Cite Your Sources" and write down the information you will need to include the work in a bibliography.

ASSIGNMENT THREE­  - PART III. LOCATING NEWSPAPER ARTICLES

 

1. Find the New York Times Obituaries Indexes (CT 213 N47; CT 213 N47 1969-1978) in the second floor of the King Library Reference section.

 

2. Search through the obituary indexes under the surname (last name) of your person.

 

3. Write down the citation information for your person's obituary in the space below:

4. Find the New York Times newspaper on microfilm on the Lower Level of the King Library in the Microforms area.

 

5. Retrieve the microfilm reel for the year that contains the article you have listed above and
copy the actual newspaper article from the microfilm. Ask on the Lower Level for help with
finding or copying microfilm. Attach a copy to this sheet when you turn in the assignment.

 

 

6. Read the newspaper article on your person. What was your person's major contribution to society according to the obituary?
