Newspaper and Magazine Exercise

In what was a turning point in the Senate Watergate hearings, Alexander Butterfield revealed on July, 1973, that President Nixon taped conversations in his offices.

I would like you to read the attached copy of Butterfield's testimony, and then write a two page paper in which you compare Butterfield's statements with the way his testimony was reported in the following:

• Los Angeles Times
• New York Times
• Newsweek
• Time
• U.S. News and World Report
• Washington Post

There are three questions you should consider when writing your essay:

1. How accurate and complete were the reports?
2. Did all of the accounts recognize the importance of Butterfield's revelations?
3. Did any of the accounts mention John Dean?

General instructions for your essay:

• It should have an effective title.
• It should have a clear thesis statement and summary.
• Keep direct quotations short
• Make your essay comparative; use all six sources
• It must have footnotes and a bibliography. Any books you use for background information must be cited as well.
