What is WSCUC?
SJSU is accredited by the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC). WSCUC is an institutional accrediting agency serving a diverse membership of public and private higher education institutions throughout California, Hawaii, and the Pacific as well as a limited number of institutions outside the U.S. There are separate agencies that accredit community colleges and high schools. WSCUC previously used the acronym WASC, but the new acronym was implemented to distinguish itself from the two other separate accrediting entities that share the same ‘WASC’ acronym but are otherwise separate organizations with independent scopes and governance structures. Only accredited institutions may administer federal financial aid to their students. The WSCUC accreditation process is outlined in the WSCUC Handbook of Accreditation (2013).
At SJSU, the Accreditation Review Committee (ARC) is representative of the entire SJSU community and oversees our accreditation. It consists of faculty, staff, students, administrators, and community members who contribute to and review our WSCUC Institutional Report. University Policy S16-5 [pdf] describes the committee and how it is formed. The Accreditation Liaison Officer (ALO) who communicates with WSCUC. This is currently Dr. Thalia Anagnos, the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education. The Faculty Chair of ARC, who helps assemble the Institutional report and coordinate the meetings and activities of the ARC, is Dr. Pamela Richardson, Professor, Department of Occupational Therapy in the College of Health and Human Sciences. The SJSU Director of Assessment, Dr. Priya Raman, is also a key member of ARC. Members of ARC attend WSCUC trainings, workshops, WSCUC Academic Resource Conferences, and webinars. At these meetings, they learn about the WSCUC accreditation process, share the accomplishments of SJSU, and learn about the best practices from other institutions.
In July 2015 the WSCUC Commission reaffirmed SJSU’s accreditation for seven years as summarized in its findings in the July 2015 letter [pdf]. A Special Visit was completed in Spring 2017 to follow up on developments in the areas of leadership, organizational climate, shared governance, and campus climate. In Summer 2021, SJSU will submit it's Institutional Report (Self-Study). For a detailed timeline of the next review cycle view the Accreditation Review Committee section.
