Declare an AFAM Major or Minor

The Department of African American Studies offers African American Studies as a Major, as well as African American Studies (18 units) and Black Women's Studies (15 units) as Minors. 

Instructions for declaring an AFAM Major or Minor:

  1. Complete an official SJSU Addition/Change of Major or Minor Form. There are two versions of the form: one for students with fewer than 90 units [pdf] and one for those with more than 90 units
  2. Fill out the AFAM Department Major Form [pdf] (also known as AFAM Contract for Major), and/or the appropriate minor form (Listed/linked below). Indicate which courses you have completed, are in the process of completing, or those you plan to complete in order to satisfy the unit requirements. Be sure to include the semester and year you took the class, the final grade and the course units.
  3. Schedule an appointment with the Undergraduate Advisor/Chair, Dr. Travis Boyce to review and sign the forms.
