Federal TRiO Programs

The Federal TRiO Programs aim to identify and provide services for individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. This includes individuals who are low-income, first-generation college students, and individuals with disabilities. There are a total of eight TRiO programs, two of which have a presence at SJSU:

  • Student Support Services (SSS) ASPIRE Program
  • McNair Scholars Program

SSS-ASPIRE Program

The SSS-ASPIRE program is a federally funded program that aims to increase college retention and graduate rates among students. This program provides opportunities for academic development and helps students complete postsecondary education.

At SJSU, we serve 258 students and take 50 new students every year. Enrollment is ongoing and is applicable for freshman, sophomores, juniors and seniors. The program includes:

  • One-on-one advising
  • In house writing and math tutors
  • Cultural trips to plays, ballets, symphonies, and museums
  • Federal Aid Grant up to $1,000 for active and participating students
