MS Biomedical Engineering (BME) Curriculum Overview

Students must complete a thesis or project as their culminating experience.  In either case they must complete the required core courses and the appropriate number of electives to meet the university’s requirement of 30 semester units, as outlined below.

Thesis Option - Plan A

Required Courses - 16 units:

  • BME 177:  Physiology for Engineers (3 units)

  • BME 207:  Experimental Methods in Biomedical Engineering (3 units)

  • BME 210: Mathematical Methods in Biomedical Engineering (3 units)

  • BME 272: Medical Device Design and Principles (3 units)

  • BME 274:  Regulatory, Clinical and Manufacturing Aspects of Biomedical Devices (3 units)

  • BME 291:  Thesis/Project Preparation Seminar (1 unit)

Electives - 9 units

Thesis - 5 units:

  • BME 298:  MS Project (2 units)
  • BME 299:  MS Thesis (3 units)

 

Project Option - Plan B

Required Courses - 16 units:

  • BME 177: Physiology for Engineers (3 units)
  • BME 207: Experimental Methods in Biomedical Engineering (3 units)
  • BME 210: Mathematical Methods in Biomedical Engineering (3 units)
  • BME 272: Medical Device Design and Principles (3 units)
  • BME 274: Regulatory, Clinical and Manufacturing Aspects of Biomedical Devices (3 units)
  • BME 291: Thesis/Project Preparation Seminar (1 unit)

Electives - 12 units

Project - 2 units:

  • BME 298: Master's Project - 2 units

Students may take courses not listed above as electives; in this case they must first obtain the approval of the BME Department Graduate Coordinator.

Other SJSU Requirements

  • Satisfy the CSU Graduate Writing Requirement (which may require an additional 3 units for Engr 200W)
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a C or better on all courses.
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 and a C or better on all courses are listed in the Candidacy form [pdf]
  • Pass MS Project/Thesis Proposal presentation and final presentation.
  • Students who are admitted to conditionally classified standing must satisfy the conditions, such as completing the assigned transition coursesand fill out and submit a Change of Classification form [pdf] when the conditions have been met.
