Doctoral Dissertation Deadlines

Completing a doctoral dissertation requires planning and attention to deadlines. Work closely with your dissertationcommittee and/or graduate advisor to meet your departmental deadlines for committee review and the defense of your dissertation. A dissertation should be submitted to the Office of Graduate Studies only after you have applied for graduation and after all members of your dissertation committee have approved your dissertation. Other information about applying for graduation, university deadlines, graduation requirements, and forms can be found on the Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations (GAPE) website.

There are two important deadlines to consider when submitting your dissertation to Graduate Studies:

  • Submitting your dissertation for initial review
  • Submitting your dissertation for publication

Deadlines for submitting your dissertation for format review and publication by Graduate Studies. Your dissertation committee must have approved and signed off on your dissertation and you have applied for graduation.

Because deadlines are posted well in advance of each dissertation cycle, extensions of the deadlines are not granted. It is the responsibility of the author to ensure that the dissertation is submitted on time to Graduate Studies and in the format stipulated in the SJSU Master's Thesis and Doctoral Dissertation Guidelines (pdf).
