Venice is a city famous for its exotic and astonishing elegance built impossibly on the sea. Situated beneath the alps of northern Italy, Venice earned its reputation based on its mirage-like appearance of floating palaces and churches highlighting its natural beauty. In fifteen days, students will experience Venetian art in its original context emphasizing the great painters and architects of the Renaissance. Students will stay in pleasant, centrally-located housing accommodations and meet on-site for class lectures, discussions and will be briefed by local experts. While students will mostly experience Venice on foot, the program will also provide an excursion by boat to observe the larger lagoon environment, the Lido inlet and its threatened ecology. Milan, Florence and Rome are easily reachable from Venice within a few hours by train. Fieldwork will include visits "in situ" (on location) to the major monuments and museums of Venice, a lagoon excursion by boat, and a day trip to Padua.
