Artificial Intelligence Special Session Application Instructions

Step 1: Apply via Cal State Apply 

  1. Starting October 1st, you can apply for the Fall 2023 semester via Cal State Apply
  2. Find the and select the program "Artificial Intelligence (Special Session)" on the application by searching "San Jose" or "Artificial Intelligence." 
  3. When prompted for a  Statement of Purpose, instead simply discuss your background in the following areas. A formal essay is not expected. Programming, including any practical experience as well as coursework      - Programming, including any practical experience as well as coursework 

       - Calculus

       - Linear algebra

       - Statistics

e. Submit your application by June 1st, 2023 & submit supporting documents by June 20th, 2023

f. SJSU cannot offer part-time programs to students on F-1, J-1, or B visas. This is a part-time program. This program is not open for international applicants on F-1, J-1, or B visas. For more information about visas, see here

g. Prequalification does not guarantee admission to San José State University. Candidates must formally apply and submit all required documents/test scores by the university's specified deadlines. Applying for admission to an off-campus cohort at San José State University is not a guarantee that the program will occur; cohorts must meet minimum enrollment levels in order to take place. Please be aware that in the event a cohort does not launch due to low enrollment, any and all associated application fees cannot be refunded. 

Step 2: Gather Required Documents

a. Baccalaureate Degree: An applicant must have a degree equivalent to a four-year U.S. baccalaureate degree in Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science or a closely related field. The university does not accept 3-year degrees.

b. Resume: Working experience in software applications/systems development experience will be taken into positive consideration.

c. Transcripts: Original transcripts pertaining to all degrees listed on your application are required to be considered for admission. A GPA at least 3.0 out of 4.0 (or international equivalent ratio). Conditional admissions may be granted for applicants with an exceptional employment background and a GPA that’s less than 3.0, but greater than 2.5.

d. Foreign academic coursework: SJSU requires that all applicants with degrees obtained outside of the United States provide a WES (World Education Services) evaluation. Basic, document-by-document evaluation is sufficient. Transcripts/Mark Sheets must be sent directly to WES for evaluation. SJSU must receive the academic record and the evaluation directly from WES. While SJSU will not accept evaluations from institutions other than WES normally, due to the current global health pandemic, Graduate Admissions also approved the use of Academic Credentials Evaluation Institute, Inc. (ACEI) or International Education Evaluations, LLC (IEE) for an evaluation of international coursework for Fall 2022 applicants.

e. English Proficiency Test Scores: If you have earned your current degrees in a country which does not primarily speak English, there are multiple options for establishing English Language Proficiency. Please find full details on English Language Proficiency tests and waivers is found here.

f. GRE is not required.

g. Reference letters are not required.


Step 3: Send Required Documents

a. Cost: Current program cost is approximately $2,550 per course. With that course cost as basis, the total program cost depends on program length, misc fees and other variables.

b. The To Do list will be shown on your account.

c. Please make arrangements to send all documents to San José State University Graduate Admissions and Programs Evaluation (GAPE) after you apply online. The Engineering Extension office will not be able to accept any application documents.

d. Admission Priority: The program admits the most qualified applicants to fill its available space. In other words, an applicant that meets all admission requirements might be denied due to insufficient space.
