This course is an introduction to modern English grammar and meets the
requirements of the English major and the Credential program. We will be using a
modern, structural approach to the challenges and problems of linguistic and
grammatical analysis. You will need to memorize terms, as well as learn to use these
concepts to assess the validity of grammatical categories and structures. 


 
We will be using my lectures notes as our textbook. You should read the
assigned sections and do the exercises for class discussion. I will highlight the most
important skills and concepts in class. Exam questions will be structured like the
questions in the book or the questions I give as homework. 


 
Homework and classwork will be assigned on a regular basis. If you miss a
class, you must get the homework assignment from me in my office hour or from 
another student. Homework assignments are NOT available on-line and I will not email 
them to you. Exams, likewise, can only be made up in the case of genuine and
compelling emergencies beyond the student's control, provided you contact me as soon 
as possible. All work must be your own. If in doubt, please consult me or the SJSU 
Academic Honesty Policy. If you need Disability Accommodations, please see me early 
in the semester.
