English 103 - Modern English Professor N. Stork Fall 2011 Office: FO 218 Office Hours: M 1230-1330, R 1400-1600, and by appointment 924-4477 nancypstork@gmail.com This course is an introduction to modern English grammar that meets the requirements of the English major and the Credential program. You will learn to break down, identify and assess grammatical structures. Your powers of memorization will be employed. Grammar is not punctuation, nor is it usage. Grammar is fascinating. Grammar is the secret structure of the universe. Read the assigned sections of the text and do the exercises contained therein before the date on which they are assigned. (Can you find the imperative mood, relative clause or participle phrase in the preceding sentence? Soon you will. Is it good writing? That's a question for a different class, but this class will help you answer it.) Homework and classwork will be assigned on a regular basis. If you miss a class, you must get the homework assignment from me in my office hour or from another student. Homework assignments are NOT available on-line and I will not email them to you. Exams and homework can only be made up in the case of genuine and compelling emergencies beyond the student's control, provided you contact me as soon as possible before the assignment is due. PLEASE email me when you have an emergency. All work must be your own. If in doubt, please consult me or the SJSU Academic Honesty Policy. If you need Disability Accommodations, please see me early in the semester. Required Text: English Grammar Notes, copyright Nancy P. Stork, course reader available at the A. S.
