The EPICS program originally started at Purdue University in 1995 and has since grown to include more than 20 other universities nationwide. San Jose State University ran a pilot of the EPICS program in the 2015-16 academic year that included three multidisciplinary senior projects for three community partners. In 2016-17, two new EPICS courses were added to the SJSU course catalog to allow lowerclassmen to join EPICS teams.
The premise behind EPICS is Service learning. The service to our community partners engages students, and illustrates the application of engineering and technology for the benefit of humankind. It requires students to apply what they learned in the classroom to authentic, real-world engineering challenges, which develops strong design skills. It also develops empathy, teamwork, communication and leadership, which are skills valued by industry and by society. Finally, the opportunity to work with industry mentors provides professional practice and a glimpse into careers in engineering and technology.
