After height and weight have been taken, electrodes are placed on the chest 12-Lead EKG (electrocardiogram) assessment. The treadmill tests generally begin with walking, speed in increased until the subject has reached his or her fastest 'comfortable' pace (which may be fast walking or running). Blood pressure is measured before the test begins and during once or twice during the first few minutes of every test. Here a subject is having blood pressure taken while walking on the treadmill.
Here the subject is beginning to run during a test; blood pressure will be taken during the next minute and then the cuff will be removed for the remainder of the test.
Periodically during testing subjects are asked to point to a number to indicate their feelings about the exercise. The Borg Rating of Perceived Exertion scale is used at the Physical Performance Institute.
In this picture the subject is about half way through the testing. While he is jogging on the treadmill the technician is monitoring heart rate and gas exchange variables on the Med Graphics Cardio O2 Metabolic Cart.
Testing can also be performed using the CardioO2 cycle. In this case, the workload is gradually increased throughout the testing. Subjects do not need to maintain any particular cadence or rpm.
