WHAT IS WISHPERD?

WISHPERD is an electronic internet discussion list for anyone interested in Women in Sport, Health, Physical Education, Recreation, or Dance. The list was created to facilitate on-line academic discussions and information exchange by professionals in these fields. Uses have included discussions on issues of concern; distribution of requests for help in information gathering for research or personal interest; calls for papers; announcements of positions available, new publications, and grant opportunities; and notices about conferences. In other words, posting of any item of interest to subscribers. List discussions are initiated and sustained by members.

RECEIVING AND SENDING MESSAGES

Once subscribed you will automatically receive a copy of all messages send to the list. The list has supported several interesting discussions/exchanges, including discussions of Title IX, NCAA Women's Final Four media coverage, and the icons for the 1996 Olympics. This list is unmoderated; that is, neither the list owner or manager censor or otherwise interfere with outgoing messages. Thus, once subscribed to WISHPERD you may send any message, however, common sense suggests that messages should relate to the topics pertinent to the list: women's sports, health, physical education, recreation, or dance. Issues or questions related to these topics are appreciated.

Once subscribed, you can send a message to all current subscribers by addressing your message to

WISHPERD@listproc.sjsu.edu

Each list subscriber will get a copy of your message and you will get an acknowledgment that the message has been distributed. Only valid subscribers may post messages to this list. You may also use the 'reply' function to respond to a posted message, this will send your response to the sender of the original post.

LIST COMMANDS

You can change how you receive mail, leave the list, and do many other things by sending commands to the listproc or network computer. The list is run by two computers: one that relays messages to members (WISHPERD) and another that acts on commands or wishes of an individual member (LISTPROC). Commands sent to WISHPERD only serve to irritate (inflame) members and let them know you are a newbie.

Send all commands to LISTPROC@listproc.sjsu.edu

Write commands in the message part of your mail. Use one line per command. Listproc ignores the Subject: line of messages. Use the commands below to access the functions described (you need not send the description, just the command).

LIST MANAGER/OWNER

Carol L Christensen, PhD, Department of Human Performance, San Jose State University, manages the list, but does not edit, moderate, accept, or reject messages posted to the list. This list is what the members make it and to date there have been some excellent exchanges (along with a bit of irritating advertising). If you have questions or suggestions, contact me privately at carollc@email.sjsu.edu
