SHARING ONE OF YOUR ORGANIZATIONAL
COMMUNICATION EXPERIENCES
(Oral Presentation)
PURPOSE: The purpose of this ORAL PRESENTATION is
first, to
share with your classmates ONE of the most meaningful (life-giving)
COMMUNICATION EXPERIENCE (at work or in any other context).
You can use also your COMMUNITY SERVICE-LEARNING EXPERIENCE (if you are doing it
or have already done it). Second,
to enhance your presentational communication skills, that are critical to
succeed in the work place. On
the other hand, this assignment is designed to emphasize that our different and distinctive
organizational communication experiences do account as legitimate and valued sources of knowledge, and that we
can learn from each other.
TOPIC: You are free to select the
communication experience for your presentation. Look for the
most meaningful one (mainly positive or negative (but life-giving). This communication experience might
be (but not necessarily) related to the content of the chapter that will be covered in class the week in
which your presentation is due (see Syllabus).
CONTENT AND
STRUCTURE:
The content of your oral presentation must
be drawn from your past and/or current organizational communication experiences.
The content of the communication experience should be structured in three
sections:
1) Describe briefly the communication experience: the context (organization) and what happened.
2) Provide your own
theoretical explanation for what happened: a) why it (the communication experience) happened (the causes), b) the
relationships that you discovered, and c) the consequences or implications.
Direct experience, observation, and reasoning are different ways of
knowing. And Include some
theoretical inputs from textbook or other sources
to illustrate or expand on your won theoretical explanation.
3) Tell us what did you learn from the experience (3 majors learnings).
WRITTEN OUTLINE: The content of your oral presentation must be summarized in TWO-TYPED-PAGES, FULL-SENTENCES AND 1.5 SPACE. The basic structure of this
outline must contained: (Include the following section titles in written outline):
WRITE the titles of these sections in your OUTLINE.
I. Introduction: 1. Attention Getter, 2. Purpose and Topic, and 3. Preview
only Titles of the main points of your presentation: (a) Description,b) Theoretical explanation/and
Theoretical Inputs and c) Learnings).
II. Body: 1. Title of first communication experience and then these
three(3) main points: a) Description..., b)
Theoretical explanation/and Theoretical Inputs. c) Learnings. (If you have a
second communication experience have the same three main
points as in the first one).
III. Conclusion: 1. Summary (Restate only Titles of the main
points of your presentation: (a) Description,b) Theoretical explanation/and
Theoretical Inputs and c) Learnings), and 2. Final Thought.
Cite sources in outlined and list them in page No. 3 using APA or MLA citation
system. One citation from textbook or other sources is required.
The oral presentation
must emphasized: 1) Content relevance and organization, 2) Physical delivery skills (eye
contact, gestures, dynamism); 3) Vocal delivery skills (volume, and rate); and 4) Visual
aids (One visual aid is required).
Each individual presentation will last from 7-8 minutes.
After the oral presentation, you will have some time (7 minutes) to entertain some
questions from your classmates.
