Reading: Rebuilding corporations online

We explore the impact of internet communication on the work world as corporations employ computer technology to improve the quality of information in their offices and throughout their industries. At the same time, we consider the corresponding implications of corporate influence on the internet. Our approach calls for discussion of three approaches used to study these interlocking phenomena: discipline, diffusion, and convergence.

More U.S. Firms Checking E-Mail, Computer Files, and Phone Calls, Says American Management Association Survey - "The share of major U.S. firms that checks employee e-mail messages has jumped to 27 percent from 15 percent in 1997, and overall electronic monitoring of communications and performance has increased to 45 percent from 35 percent two years ago, according to a survey released today by the American Management Association."

New study analyzes challenges to Silicon Valley's Internet industry leadership - "Silicon Valley's historical dominance of the high-tech industry places the region at the forefront of the new economy, but growing operational and infrastructure challenges, coupled with increasing competition from other U.S. regions, may jeopardize the Valley's position as the geographic center of the Internet industry."
