Reading: Relating online
We review the arguments against and for the growth of interpersonal relationships through computer-mediated communication. In tracing the development of these arguments, we borrow a pattern from researcher Joseph B. Walther who suggests that computer-mediated communication has been characterized as impersonal by some, interpersonal by others, and potentially "hyperpersonal" in his view. After reviewing the theories relevant to each of these levels of interactivity, we consider some of the implications of conflict and attachment that persons relating online should consider. We seek a firmer understanding of why the prospect of relating online might mean to some less than they imagine and to others more than they hope.
