Heading toward Alexandria,
check out the Skyline Motel, the one with a giant wood-log swinging bench
and a painted sign featuring a silhouette of tall birches under a silvery
white moon next to the office. Sitting on the weather beaten picnic table
next to a grill (an all-too-rare amenity provided by motels these days)
a long wide expanse of doors and windows, is broken by occasional red
begonias above perfectly blue sky that stretches out over the prairies
beyond. For city dwellers, the smaller towns of the great northern states
offers an awesome display of quiet and subtlety worth a thousand miles
of driving.
