The Lincoln Highway stretches through Pennsylvania along the road that would become U.S. Highway 30. Decades after the modern turnpike bypassed the famed tourist road, you can still find old and new road signs painted red, white, and blue that feature a bronze colored bust of Abraham Lincoln – and dozens of gas stations, diners, and motels that evoke the Lincoln image. Perhaps the most beloved of the bunch is the Lincoln Motor Court located about five miles West of Bedford. A U-shaped gathering of individual cabins built in the 1940s, the Court earns its reputation for friendliness and cleanliness thanks to the 20-year efforts of Deb and Bob Altizer who maintain their 60-year old units with every country amenity and not a phone in sight. Deb explains, “I try to keep the rooms like my grandmother’s farm house . . . and you can walk into a room, sit on the bed, and imagine your grandparents on their honeymoon.”
