For some road trippers, the first glimpse of the Lone Star State offers little but flat plains and howling winter winds. The 177 miles of desolate expanse stretching between Oklahoma and New Mexico offers more than time to contemplate the open road, however. Several worthwhile motels reside within the Texas panhandle, including one relic that provides an essential stop for lovers of the Mother Road. Under the shadow of a grain elevator, the 66 Courts reside on the outskirts of Groom, near the largest cross in the Western hemisphere. This beloved relic offers a photogenic reminder of bygone Mom and Pops bypassed by the Interstate highway system.
