Student Internship Opportunities
The Film & Theatre Department offers the opportunity for students to gain invaluable "real world" experience while receiving academic credit through the TA 198 and RTVF198 Internship and Portfolio Courses.
Internships are offered every fall, spring, and summer terms. The internship is designed to help students make practical application of what they have learned in their classes. Most of the work for the course is done with the placement, but research, analysis and written work also are required to ensure that students make analytical connections between classroom and textbook abstractions about radio-television-film-multimedia and "the real thing."
Each course in the TA and RTVF curricula requires a portfolio "deliverable." The final portfolio will be organized and posted during the 198 course in order to prepare students for the job market.
Please review the materials on this page (as well as the FAQs section.) If you have additional questions, please contact the appropriate internship director (determined by the academic semester of your internship).
Professional Affiliations & Internships
Radio-Television-Film majors have many opportunities to work in broadcasting, audio production, video production, filmmaking, and also in associated media businesses such as advertising, corporate audio/video, online companies (like Google and Facebook), etc. SJSU's location in the heart of Silicon Valley makes a huge difference to our students. Our own Spartan Film Studios at San Jose State University is another truly unique creative/artistic instructional program and innovative media production facility operating in Silicon Valley. Since its inception in 2005, Spartan Film Studios has provided university students, under the direction of expert instructors and industry professionals, a full range of film production experience that has resulted in multiple feature length and short subject films. Finally our TRFT Department has a close relationship with one of the top Film Festivals in the country: CINEQUEST. Each spring our students submit their films to the festival and also gain invaluable experience by working with Cinequest and its impressive line-up of producers, directors and artists.
Theatre Arts majors also have access to numerous opportunities with professional companies connected to the department. Our alliance with the award-winning theatres provides students with access to professional instruction and experience in the theatre. Students have the opportunity to pursue professional internships in acting, directing, dramaturgy, stage management, production design, development, arts marketing and more. This affiliation between SJSU and San Jose theaters offers students the opportunity to work closely with top professionals in the field, gaining insight into the art and operations of a professional regional theatre through close interaction with members of the theatres' staffs. Students will learn what the art form of theatre means to the life of a community, and how the life of a community enriches its theatre.
