Application Process
How to Apply
Applying for graduate school at San José State University requires a two-step process:
Step 1. Applicants must complete an application through CalState Apply. For a step-by-step guide on how to complete the Cal State Apply application for SJSU, visit our SJSU Graduate International Application Tutorial. The Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations (GAPE) reviews your application for admission eligibility and financial eligibility. For more information, visit SJSU Minimum Eligibility Requirements.
Step 2. Once GAPE determines that your application meets admission eligibility, it is forwarded to the degree program for final admission review. Some programs may require additional materials and application. Review your intended degree program website for specific graduate department materials you need to submit. Application and Document Deadlines
- Application deadline is the deadline to submit the Cal State Apply application. For a step-by-step guide on how to complete the Cal State Apply application for SJSU, visit our SJSU Graduate International Application Tutorial.
- Document deadline is the deadline to submit all required documents to SJSU Graduate Admissions and Program Evaluations (GAPE). Please visit Graduate Admissions Deadlines for more information.
IMPORTANT: If supporting documents are not received by the final deadline date, your application will be canceled.
Application Status
After you have submitted your application, you must activate your MySJSU account to check your status of your application.
NOTE: Your application will not be evaluated for admission to SJSU until ALL supporting documents have been received.
To activate your MySJSU account:
- Go to Set the Password.
- Sign in to One.SJSU.edu and search for MySJSU.
- Navigate to your "To Do List" in MySJSU for information regarding missing documents that are needed to complete your application. Remember that you must meet the deadline dates to complete your application.
- Check your account regularly.

Estimated Costs
To maintain student visa status, graduates are required to enroll in 9 units of coursework
every semester. Below is an estimated cost and is subject to change. The Graduate School of Business and Special Session programs have different amounts. Please check program websites for fee information.

Required Documents
Academic Requirements
To be eligible for admission, applicants must meet SJSU minimum eligibility requirements AND Degree Program Requirements. For detailed information, visit International Steps to Admission.
- U.S. bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution, or the completion of a 4-year bachelor’s degree from a recognized, accredited, and approved institution from a country outside of the U.S.
- A 2.5 institutional GPA (from the 0.0-4.0 U.S. grading scale) in the last degree completed, or a 2.5 GPA in the last two years of full time study. Please note that individual program requirements may have a higher GPA requirement.
- Good academic standing at the last institution attended.
- English Language Proficiency Exam, if necessary.
- *3-year Indian degree holders see options for eligibility.
2. Graduate Degree Academic Requirements
Each graduate degree program has unique requirements and a separate application process. Some programs will require an additional application and materials. English Language Proficiency
Students who have graduated from a college or university in a country where the primary language is not English must submit the required English language test score.
The English proficiency exam is waived only if you meet criterias set by our Graduate Admissions. Please visit Graduate Admissions International Steps to Admission for more information.

Note: Some programs require higher test scores, so please check the Test Requirements for more information. SJSU ETS code for the TOEFL is 4687.
Applicants who have not met the English language proficiency requirement are strongly encouraged to apply to the Conditional Admission Eligibility program before applying to San José State University.
Official Transcripts
- All international applicants are required to provide an document evaluation from World Education Services (WES) for any educational work completed outsidet of the U.S., U.S. Territories, and Canada.
Mark sheets/transcripts/degree certificates must be mailed directly to WES for evaluation
and SJSU must receive the electronic evaluation directly from WES. Please do not mail your WES evaluation for it will not be considered. GAPE only accepts electronic WES evaluation.
For applicants with a degree in progress, a complete WES evaluation is required that must contain a minimum of 7 semesters of graded work. Once you complete your degree, please submit to WES a revised evaluation. The deadline to submit the final WES evaluation can be found in your MySJSU account. GAPE prefers the document-by-document evaluation from WES; however, course-by-course evaluation is acceptable. For detailed information, please visit GAPE International Steps to Admission. - Note that 3-year bachelor's degree from India is not comparable to the 4-year degree in the U.S. as it does not meet the CSU eligibility requirements. Financial Requirement
All applicants must submit a Declaration of Finance form AND a Bank Statement/Letter showing the minimum financial requirement. All letters must be dated within 6 months of the application date to ensure that the information is current.
1. Bank Statement/Letter
Send a letter from your bank or copy of your bank statement stating the amount of liquid funds meeting the financial requirement in U.S. dollars in your account (or your sponsor's account). The letter/statement must have been issued within the last six months and must be reported in U.S. dollars. If you have a sponsor, the name listed on the bank statement must match your sponsor’s name. This sponsor’s name must also be entered on your Declaration of Finance Form.
2. Declaration of Finance Form
All international applicants must submit a completed, signed, and dated SJSU Declararion of Finance form by the document deadline. The name on the form must match the account holder name on the bank statement/letter. All submitted documents become the property of San José State University and will not be returned.

Passport
A copy of the biographic page of your valid passport is required. The name listed on your passport must be exactly the same name that will appear on your I-20 if you are offered admission.

GMAT or GRE Test Scores
Some graduate programs require that applicants take GMAT or GRE. Please review Graduate Admissions Test Requirements to find out if these test are required.

Some graduate programs require letters of recommendation. Please review your department website to find out if letters of recommendation are required and where the letters must sent.
