Recipient: Kenya Thomas

Graduation Term: Spring 2017

Career plans: My longtime passion for science has driven me to want to continue to expand my knowledge in the forensic science field.  After completion of my Master’s in Forensic Sciences, I plan to have gained enough lab experience to become a Forensic Firearms Examiner.

I want to thank the CAC Reed Endowment Foundation for awarding me this scholarship. I have never received a scholarship of this caliber and plan to cherish it for a lifetime. This financial assistance will allow for me to focus more on my current research, the modification of rapid DNA. In addition to escalating my confidence level, this honor has made me realize that anything is possible. Thank You!

Graduation Term: Spring 2017

Career plans: Following my graduation from San José State University, I will be moving to Scotland this fall to pursue my Master’s degree in Forensic Science. My plan is to work as a Forensic DNA analyst in a county crime lab to gain more experience before going back to school to earn a PhD. My ultimate goal is to teach and continue my research in academia. I would like to thank the funders of the CAC Reed McLaughlin Endowment for giving me this opportunity. Receiving this scholarship award will enable me to acquire new lab skills as I conduct my research in Rapid DNA as well as public speaking skills when I present it at conferences this summer. I am truly honored to receive this scholarship and appreciate their investment in San José State University and future analysts like me.

Sierra Moore2020 Recipient: Sierra Moore

Expected graduation date: May 2022

After graduating with a degree in forensic science with a minor in psychology, I plan to attend a graduate program and a PhD program for forensic psychology. After obtaining all of my degrees, I plan to work as a psychologist somewhere in the criminal system. Once I have been working in the criminal system for a while, I want to teach at a junior college or university and work on research.

I am very thankful to have been chosen to be the recipient of the Daniel P. Lomio Memorial Scholarship. It is an honor to be chosen and will help my focus on my academics and pursue my dreams. This scholarship has pushed me to keep working hard and give back to my community in my future career and in life.

Expected graduation date: December 2021

Plans after graduating are to attend law school to use my legal knowledge to help and give back to the Santa Clara County community. I hope to one day become a key resource to my community and open my own firm.

Daniel P. Lomio served as an exemplary Police Officer and it is my goal to exhibit the same qualities at which he held his responsibility for the City of San Francisco. We share the same desire to help the community, which is why I am forever grateful. It is such a great honor to be selected for this scholarship as it has not only relieved a financial burden but has also allowed me to remain focused on my schoolwork and maintain my responsibilities both in and out of school. Thank you to the Lomio family and friends for this generous opportunity.

I am deeply grateful to the friends and family of Officer Fontana and honored to be the recipient of the Officer Jeffrey Fontana Memorial Scholarship this year. After graduation, my ultimate goal is to attend law school here in California to prepare for a career in the Federal Bureau of Investigation. 

I am incredibly grateful to the faculty at SJSU for nominating me as recipient of the Paula Stone Hubbell Memorial Scholarship, and the family members of Paula Stone Hubbell for their generous contribution to my education. Due to lifelong personal struggles with learning disabilities, this honor acknowledges students with these difficulties are fully capable of excelling in higher education. This opportunity inspires me to one day encourage students with learning disabilities to achieve their goals in higher education just as they have helped me.

After receiving my master’s degree from the Justice Studies program at SJSU, I plan to obtain a career through a non-profit organization who supports youth in the criminal justice system. I will also dedicate time to volunteering for a victim advocacy organization.

I would like to thank my family, friends, mentors, and professors at SJSU for their continuous support and guidance with my future goals. Most importantly, I would like to thank the family and donors of the Paula Stone Hubbell Memorial Scholarship for their generous contribution. I am sincerely grateful and honored that I was chosen as a recipient to receive this scholarship to aid my education. This kindness has provided me with encouragement, and I am excited to have a future career as a support system for others.

After graduation I hope to give back to our community by helping juveniles who are in the justice system. I intend to do this by working as a juvenile probation officer and giving them the tools and resources they’ll need to succeed. Everyone has a purpose and I have every intention to help our youth in the justice system realize their true potential.

I would like to express my deepest gratitude to the Brewer family for their generous donation towards helping me come one step closer to reaching my goals. I do not take this award lightly and I hope to bring honor to the Brewer family as I try and help children in our community just as Shelby did. I am overjoyed and blessed to be awarded with this year 2020 Theresa Edel Scholarship. As a first-generation college student, I am very grateful for this scholarship opportunity as it will help fund my college expenses and will allow me to continue my education.

Through my journey at SJSU I have learned so many things that have only reinforced my passion to support and advocate for our people, to speak up in the name of justice and take action, all while applying my knowledge and experience that has been transformed by the Justice Studies program and its incredible team of professors and faculty. Postgraduation, I plan to start working for a non-profit organization supporting youth who are in the juvenile justice system or at risk of entering the system. I will also set time aside to volunteer through different victim advocacy organizations inside and outside of the courtroom.

I would like to take this opportunity to express my deepest gratitude for both families and friends of Officers Gene Simpson and Gordon Silva. This scholarship will support my education as I gain experience in the complex world of the criminal justice system. As I complete my last year obtaining my master’s degree in the Justice Studies program at San Jose State University, I am grateful to be able to lighten my workload to focus more on my studies and volunteer work. I want to give a special thank you and note of respect and appreciation for police officers and the generosity of this scholarship. My goal is to obtain a Master’s Degree in Criminology and then on to Law School. I hope to further my knowledge of the Law and apply it to everyday issues that affect people with criminal records. I am passionate about the Record Clearance Project. It is here that I first learned about how this program works with the public, to expunge their records. My career objective is to become an Attorney who helps restore the lives of people who have impacted by the justice system.

I would like to express my sincerest gratitude to you for making the Willard Schmidt Scholarship possible. I was honored to be recipient of this award. This will ease my financial burden and allow me to focus on my grades and duties as a member of the Alpha Phi Sigma Honor Society.
