Professor Bio

Ky Russell obtained her M.A. in Kinesiology from San José State University in 2017, creating an interdisciplinary course of study that examined mindful fitness as a vehicle for social change. Her thesis work examined postpartum women’s experiences in yoga classes from a feminist perspective, receiving the Dr. David Furst Scholarship in Sport Studies and a Professional Development Grant from the Western Society for the Physical Education of College Women. A former professional dancer, Ms. Russell is a certified Pilates and yoga teacher, and a Master Instructor for Balanced Body Inc., teaching Pilates instructor training courses locally and nationally.

She holds a B.S. in Environmental Science, Policy, and Management and an Education Minor from UC Berkeley. Her current interests focus on implementing educational praxis, increasing awareness on women’s health issues surrounding birth and postpartum exercise, and increasing accessibility and diversity in mindful fitness programs such as Pilates and yoga.
