Calculus Placement Exam Information

NOTE:  If you are a current student and need the Calculus Placement Exam to enroll for summer and/or Fall, email or stop by the Testing Office.  Incoming students for Fall, see below for more information.

The Calculus Placement Exam (CPE) is offered to students who want to enroll in Math 30P, Math 30PL, Math 30, or Math 71 without having to meet the prerequisites some other way.

What is the Calculus Placement Exam?

The Calculus Placement Exam at SJSU is conducted through ALEKS PPL, an adaptive online program that uses artificial intelligence to map a student's strengths and weaknesses.  It consists of 3 parts: 

  1. Initial Placement Assessment (30 questions, about 60-90 minutes to complete)
  2. Prep and Learning Module (individualizes, self-paced online review)
  3. Access to 2 Placement Assessments (proctored by the SJSU Testing Office)

What do I need to bring with me?

On the day of the exam you will need to bring your photo ID (SJSU Student ID preferred), $20 cash or checkNo calculators are allowed on the test.

When do I get my scores?

Your score will automatically be uploaded at the end of  the day.  The score will be used to recommend the highest possible Math course for your major.

CPE for Incoming Freshmen

  • It is strongly recommended that incoming freshmen take their placement exam either before their orientation so that they will be able to register for the appropriate math classes during orientation registration.
