I was born in Buffalo, and grew up in North Tonawanda, New York. I received my BA in mathematics in 1972 from Elmira College in Elmira, New York. My graduate work in mathematics was done at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, where I received my MA in 1975 and my PhD in 1977. My thesis was in the field of algebraic topology. I taught mathematics at Salisbury State College, on the Eastern Shore of Maryland, during the 1976-1977 academic year. I have been teaching at San Jose State University since 1977.
